2nd Story Theatre Puts On A Good Show

By Alaina Leary

There's only one goal at the 2nd Story Theatre: Put on a good show. The theatre, located in Warren, is a fun, intimate theatre in the round that puts on quality shows throughout the year. Allyson Schiller, the theatre's communications manager, answered some questions for us about 2nd Story.

How would you describe the theatre experience at one of your shows?

As a local professional theatre run by a small, intimate staff, our audience has come expect well-produced entertainment every time they enter our building, whether it is in dramatic or comedic form. They know that by walking through our door, they will be met with friendly faces and be taken care of from their time downstairs in our restaurant through the entire performance in the upstairs theatre.

We offer a unique experience at 2nd Story, because not only are we a theatre that offers seven to eight plays a year, but we also have a full-service restaurant that is available pre and post-show. Although we offer both experiences, your waiter and your actor will not be the same person. Both are experts in their field, which affords our patrons an easeful, enjoyable evening from start to finish. 2nd Story has worked hard to establish a sense of community in the East Bay. We strive to be an environment that locals can visit on a night out and spend time with their neighbors. Through the union of food and entertainment, there is something to satisfy everyone here at 2nd Story.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors who desire a stage career?

Do every job you can. Take every costume maintenance job, run a light board, or anything else that comes your way. The more you can do, the more valuable you are to a theatre. It will also afford you more opportunities to get your foot in the door. If you want to act professionally, you need to understand the work everyone else puts into a production. The best way to do that is to learn it yourself.

What else would you like to convey to the public about your theatre? What do you enjoy about your job?

We are a small team that does a little bit of everything to get the job done. We are trained in all aspects of theatre. Someone who is showing you to your seat may also be performing in the production you see. The person who built the set may also be taking dinner reservations. Ease, comfort and enjoyment are what our patrons have come to expect from an evening with us. As Communications Manager, am lucky to have the opportunity to get to know our entire patron base. My job offers the opportunity to get to know the residents on the East Bay on the individual level and collectively as a group. As someone who is new to the Rhode Island area, I am continually impressed with the sense of community in the local towns and honored to have joined it.

Our Mission Statement: The mission of 2nd Story Theatre is to engage and expand the cultural community in southern New England, particularly the East Bay area of Rhode Island, through fostering the dramatic arts. We nurture regional talent though performance opportunities, educational programs, and professional development. We endeavor to offer our audience plays produced to high artistic standards in an immediate, immersive and uniquely welcoming environment that respects, engages, entertains, and educates our patrons.
