An Inspirational Atmosphere for All Drives Olympia Fitness and Performance

By Pamela Sosnowski

At Olympia Fitness and Performance, it's not uncommon for athletes from the golf, football, and hockey worlds to share gym space alongside moms, seniors, and middle-aged men. As the Cranston gym's owner Steve Zarriello stresses, everyone at his facility is welcome and treated equally even if it's been years since they've slipped on a pair of sneakers.

"One of the most common things we hear is, 'I have to get in shape before I come to you,'" he said. "This is completely untrue! If you've never trained a day in your life, you are welcome and the program you do will be designed for you: your abilities, your strengths, your weaknesses, and your needs."

Since 2011 Olympia Fitness and Performance has been offering a variety of workout options from one-on-one personal training to small group classes where each member receives attention and guidance. One Yelper describes the gym's atmosphere as "similar in style to Crossfit, but without the cult-tishness." Every class is led by an instructor holding a degree in a fitness-related field plus certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. No matter which program(s) a member decides to participate in, they are completely customized to their fitness goals and needs.

"Our programs can take anyone from any fitness level and make improvements on it," Zarriello said. "Even our group training programs are tailored to the individuals to an extent to ensure that people are getting a workout that's appropriate for their fitness level and their strengths and weaknesses."

Olympia Fitness and Performance is available to try on for size prior to purchasing a membership. A free trial session or evaluation for any of their programs is available, and group fitness classes may be enjoyed for one month on an unlimited basis for $45. Members may also visit and use the gym's state-of-the-art equipment at any time instead of joining in on a scheduled class.

In addition to personal and group training, the gym offers sport-specific programs for athletes such as golfers. The Golf Performance Training program helps golfers improve their swing speed while preventing injuries. But Zarriello is also proud of what his facility has to offer to those training to become police officers and firefighters.

"They both have specific requirements, and the firefighter PPA (Physical Performance Assessment) has a very specific set of exercises that most people can't mimic at a traditional gym," he said. "We've been successfully training people for years to succeed in these tests."

Whole Body Cryotherapy, an innovative form of therapy that literally helps athletes cool down and prevent soreness after a workout session, is also available at Olympia Fitness and Performance. Developed in Japan and used in both Japan and Europe for decades, cryotherapy uses gasiform nitrogen to lower the skin's surface temperature by 30-50 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of two to three minutes. This releases anti-inflammatory endorphins to minimize the any post-workout aches and strains. Cryotherapy is available by appointment only.

Olympia Fitness and Performance has been transforming people's lives for over five years now, and that is still Zarriello's favorite part of his job.

"There's something very rewarding about when someone finally achieves a goal like losing a certain amount of weight or being able to finally perform a task that so many of us take for granted like running or having the ability to do a sit-up or pull-up," he said. "Those are the things that really keep everyone on our staff motivated, we love seeing other people succeed."
