Audience Comes Prepared at Academy Players

By Jake Levin

Be prepared to become a part of the show at the Academy Players.

For 62 years, the Academy Players have been putting on authentic community theater performances in Providence, R.I. Rita A. Maron, CEO and Artistic Director, likened seeing a show at the Academy Players to watching a show in your living room.

"It is important to us that the audience leaves feeling as though they were fully engulfed in the production without ever leaving their seat," Maron said. "Our space allows us to put up large productions in more of an intimate setting, which encourages the feeling of simply sitting on your couch and watching a show with your family."

Maron began working in theater at a young age, when she found she enjoyed the ways in which it enabled her to express herself creatively. She also gained satisfaction in seeing others succeed in the medium, finding themselves both on and off the stage. That same attitude is still present with the Academy Players, where anyone can hone their craft as an actor, even if they're just attempting it for the first time.

"Here at Academy Players of Rhode Island, we have worked hard to create a space where everyone feels comfortable to perfect their craft, explore new creative outlets and simply be themselves," Maron said. "Even when we aren't putting up a show, our space is constantly filled with our Academy family members who are working on community outreach, fundraising events and educational opportunities."

In addition to acting classes, vocal and dance lessons are also offered at the Academy Players.

Maron said that anyone who wishes to become a part of the theater researches their desired show and come prepared to the audition. That way, whether a person thinks they've done great or done poorly during the audition, at least it will be known they gave it their best.

"We love seeing someone embody the characters and story when they come to an audition," Maron said. "While the audition process can be scary, there is nothing better than seeing someone come in who is nervous but ready to start a new journey, chapter or experience in their life."

The Academy Players of Rhode Island is located at 180 Button Hole Dr., behind the Button Hole Golf Course, in Providence.
