If someone is decorating their own home, what can help make it look like it was professionally designed?

It is important to be conscious of lighting in a space relative to color selection. Picking a complementary color palette, focal point or theme to decorate around helps create a plan to keep you focused and see a design through. This eliminates a project being started and then never looking complete because it has become overwhelming. The mixing of textures of fabrics and furnishings in a room also adds a professional look.

What are some interior design elements that can give a sophisticated or elegant feel to your home.

Fabrics rich in color and texture, as well as the right light fixtures can make a significant impact on a room, creating an air of sophistication. Some of the most elegant looks can be achieved by combining timeless and luxurious looking fabrics for window treatments and upholstered furnishings in sophisticated neutral colors enhanced with beautiful tapes or trims, highlighted with vibrant colored accent pieces and accessories.

How can people decide if a specific furnishing from a catalogue/store is right for a particular room or space?

Determine if it is to be functional, decorative or both, and that it will meet those needs. Scale is also important. Make sure to measure the item (or get the measurements) and the space you intend to put it in so that it will fit properly and that you maintain a proper traffic flow within a room. Print and computer screen colors are not always accurate. When possible request finish or fabric samples to make sure it works with the lighting and color palette in your room or space as you envision it.

What are some common color combinations that could work well in a modern house?

I love neutral colors. It is amazing how many different shades of gray or tan there are that look gorgeous in a modern home. Add to that palette a soft ivory or crisp white and you have a clean modern look. Enhance these neutrals with navy, black, a rich brown or a bold turquoise color to step it up. Combine that with an accent of orange, red or orchid, and you have a dramatic modern look.

What advice would you give to homeowners who are redecorating and want to create a comfortable but stylish environment?

People are generally leaning more towards natural and lighter looking environments. This can easily translate into a relaxed, light and comfortable interior. The use of heavy layered window treatments has virtually disappeared, with people wanting to enhance and maintain as much natural light as possible. The use of linens, cottons, woven woods, grass cloth wall covering, sisal or jute rugs, stone, wood or stainless steel furnishings or surfaces, combined with subtle faux leather and faux fur accents or any combination thereof depending on personal preference, can create a very stylish, comfortable and beautiful environment.
