Elegant Design Meets Gourmet Flavors at Something Different Cake Couture

By Marina I. Jokic

Being a small specialty cake store, Something Different in North Providence, Rhode Island has a lot of opportunity for creative license. Cake stylist Maureen Girard brings her background in painting, sculpting, and sugar artistry to her job and is known for her incredibly creative approach to confectionary art.

"I can offer more unique cake styles and designs for weddings and all other occasions," Maureen said. "I am not rushed to mass produce, [and] there is a limit to the amount of orders taken on a given weekend."

Something Different's wedding cakes are known for their masterfully sculpted fondant and elaborate scrollwork that converge flawlessly for an extraordinary presentation. Elegance and attention to the finest details, such as their signature sugar flowers, are what set Maureen's work from her peers.

Some popular flavors include Italian white almond butter crème, chocolate and Bavarian crème filling, lemon, raspberry, and pink champagne with strawberry. An especially decadent choice, the Tiramisu cake with coffee, Kahlua, and mascarpone cheese filling is deliciously moist and can be fashioned into pretty much any shape.

Likewise, Maureen takes great pains to produce entirely personalized birthday cakes, with the most elaborate details integrated into her designs. From musical instruments to movie characters and sports teams, Maureen can transform any idea into an edible masterpiece.

"I really don't compete with the customer buying a cake from a convenience store," Maureen said. "The customer coming to see me is looking for 'Something Different' and with a 'wow factor' for that special occasion, something exquisite and unique, [basically] not your average cake."

You can bring your ideas in the form of a favorite object, theme, and set of colors to your free consultation and Maureen will work with you to ensure a custom-made cake as special as its recipient. Accessorize with coordinating cookie favors and monogrammed wedding cookies to add an extra personal touch. Something Different Cake Couture takes the time to create an exceptional one-of-a-kind work of art that is a slice above the rest.

"I enjoy being able to work with people to design something for them that not only makes them happy but that they enjoy eating," Maureen said. "Hearing them say 'not only was the cake beautiful, it tasted amazing'."
