Everything You Need to Know About Custom Cabinets: An Interview with Tracey Griffing of Trakar Woodworks

By Tracey Griffing

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a custom cabinet/furniture/woodworking shop. We have been serving the custom woodworking industry as Trakar Woodworks since 2000. In 2000, the founder of Trakar Woodworks Tracey Griffing opened a custom wood shop in Garnerville, New York, with the hope of continuing a career of custom woodworking that began in the early 1980s. My vision and experience brought together the wants and needs of the client and the ability of a true custom cabinet shop to fulfill all the clients' expectations. In 2005 I moved the company to Rhode Island to continue her quest to build quality cabinets and furniture that is not only beautiful but functional. My love of woodworking and the desire to listen to the needs and wants of a prospective clients has been the cornerstone of Trakar Woodworks.

What are some of the advantages when a homeowner chooses custom cabinetry?

There are many advantages of using custom cabinetry. In the first meeting together with the client I am able to gather ideas and input from the client along with basic measurements to create a work scope to give the project meaning and direction. Using my visual abilities and knowledge of working space I can create a project that uses the space of the room to create cabinetry that fits well and looks like it belongs.

Within the cabinetry field there is always a stock cabinet company, whether from a home center or other storefront company with a showroom claiming to be the answer to your dreams as a homeowner. The sales pitch is on from the moment you enter. The person you are speaking to is not necessarily and not usually a seasoned cabinet maker who has been involved in the creation of a home project from beginning to end. At Trakar Woodworks you will be talking to the cabinet maker who of course wants to make the sale but is more interested in the happy outcome of your project with the least interruption to your home and your lifestyle as possible. I am involved and manage all aspects of your project from demolition, if necessary, to managing other contractors as far as plumbing, electrical or whatever else your particular project requires.

Materials of custom cabinetry also a factor in long lasting, well-built cabinets. Many stock cabinets are built from inferior materials including 1/2" particle board cabinet walls to plastic draw tracks in some cases, unless you request upgrades. Every upgrade is an increase in the price in the stock cabinetry world. In my shop your job is automatically priced with 3/4" plywood, solid wood frames, solid wood doors and ball bearing metal full extension draw tracks. The reason for this is the durability of these materials over time and the reliability of the using quality materials.

Can you talk about the cost of custom cabinets versus pre-made cabinets?

The cost of custom cabinetry is always a factor. My shop is always trying to keep the prices as competitive as possible. Will it be the price of cabinets at a home center, I would say no but the trade off has several factors.

The quality of your cabinets.
The durability over time of your cabinetry.
The knowledge and experience of a seasoned cabinet maker/general contractor who has done many projects over the years and has the experience to act on any situation that may arise during the process of the installation of your cabinets or your remodeling to complete your project to your satisfaction.
The installation of cabinetry is done by my shop and I am always on the site, either doing hands on work or supervision of others to complete your project.
We are neat, mindful and careful of your home and other furniture, flooring, etc., during the process.
The availability to call my cell phone during the completion of your project and reach me with any questions you might have. You can also email me at tracey@trakarwoodworks.com or text me any questions.

How much flexibility would custom cabinets give homeowners who want to remodel their kitchen or bathroom?

The flexibility of custom cabinets and a great custom shop is immeasurable. My desire is to build you what you want and to complete the vision you have and the finished look of your home to your satisfaction.

Does choosing custom-made cabinets mean a homeowner will have to wait longer for the work to be done? What's the process usually like?

The wait time for custom cabinets is dependent on the scope of your project and the materials you choose. I try to give an accurate timeline of your project on the first meeting we have. Using an experienced person can ease the amount of unforeseen problems. Sometimes situations arise that are unforeseen and will be dealt with in a timely fashion.
