Experience a Rhode Island Tradition at Iggy's Doughboys and Chowder House

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

"It's always summer at Iggy's" reads the slogan. Iggy's Doughboys and Chowder House has been ladling out bowls of clam chowder and its signature doughboys at the original Oakland Beach location in Warwick since 1989. Now in multiple locations statewide, Iggy's has become a Rhode Island tradition.

Marketing Manager Susan Gravino tells us that Iggy's "evolved from a clam shack" with the restaurant name derived from a family license plate that had IG-6 as its identification. A family-owned business from the start, Gravino and her husband passed the ladle and doughboy recipes to their son David Gravino and daughter MaryAnn Soares.

The menu - over 50 items' worth - is exhaustive. Items include beef and turkey burgers, various seafood platters, lobster and clam rolls, salads, sandwiches, as well as three types of clam chowder: Manhattan, New England and Rhode Island. Gravino dishes on the food, "The best thing on the menu is a toss-up between Fish and Chips or the Chowder and Clam Cake Combo. We are one of the few that offer a traditional Rhode Island clear clam chowder."

Of course, you will want to try Iggy's acclaimed doughboy, which Gravino describes as "a sweet piece of bread, fried to a golden brown and served plain or topped with your choice of sugar - powdered, cinnamon, regular or a mix of all three."

Distinguished with Best Clam Shack award from Rhode Island Monthly and nationally featured on CBS's The Early Show as their choice for the Best Clam Chowder as part of their A Taste of America, Iggy's proves its popularity. It's so popular that the restaurant even offers to ship its chowder, doughboys, and clam cakes overnight throughout the United States and sells Iggy's imprinted apparel, mugs, packaged mixes, canned clams and gift baskets. Iggy's is a Rhode Island tradition that has caught on.
