Can you briefly explain what faux and decorative paint finishes are?

Faux painting is a technique used to make one material look like another. An example of this would be wood graining. Almost anything can be faux painted to resemble the look of wood. Other methods include marbleizing, sponging and stenciling.

What are the areas/rooms that people most often use them in?

Decorative finishes are usually used where they will have the greatest impact. Foyers, dining rooms and guest baths are always popular. These treatments give your home a one of a kind feel.

What finishes would work well for a living room that you want to look stylish but not too formal?

Glazing is a technique that allows you to blend multiple colors together to give your walls a softer look. Stripes also work well in these areas. They add fun to a normally formal space.

Can you give some examples of the finishes and colors that homeowners have been the most happy with?

Metallic finishes have been very popular. From gold leaf ceilings to silver walls, all have been successful and stunning.

What tips do you have for people on how to make sure their walls match the rest of a room's decor?

Don't over do it. If you want a calm interior, chose a very soft faux finish. If you like a livelier room, choose stripes. The walls in your room should only be the backdrops for the rest. If you enter a room and the first thing you notice is the faux finish, it's too much.
