High Steppin' Dance Academy Trains Children, Adults in Recreational and Competitive Dance

By Kelly Church

As part of the Johnston, RI community for more than two decades, High Steppin' Dance Academy is a professional and amateur dance studio. Owner and artistic director Jo-Ann Fontaine offers classes for children as young as two years old, training them through all styles of dance, competitions and just for fun.

"Dance has always been a way for my students to express their feelings," Fontaine said. "Love, heartache, struggle, happiness. It's been a way for children who have broken homes to come in and build a family, and we are that support they need to strive and do good. Our dancers make this their home."

High Steppin' Dance Academy's children's classes include tumbling and acrobatics, hip hop, jazz, tap, lyrical, ballet and pointe, break dancing, and conditioning. Fontaine described her dance classes as "personalized and comprehensive." There are classes to accommodate all levels and, as the student progresses, they move to the next level of dance classes.

"As a teacher, I am here to help them when they fall, to help give advice when they need it, or create a piece that they can push their feelings out through and face their problems," Fontaine said.

High Steppin' Dance Academy holds an annual recital for all dancers. Fontaine believes that having this recital to look forward to every year gives kids something to work towards. Above all, though, it's about helping kids work towards their goals and their dreams, which Fontaine encourages them to never lose sight of.

The dance studio also offers adult classes include Zumba and hip hop. For High Steppin' Dance Academy's full class schedule, visit highsteppindance.com.
