Old School Meets New School at the Dean Hotel

By Jake Levin

As Aarin B. Clemons puts it, the Dean Hotel is a modern interpretation of an age-old story.

Clemons is the General Manager of the hotel in Providence, R.I., which he described as a modest, 52-room boutique. Originally built by the episcopal diocese in 1912, Clemons said that he and those who work at the Dean Hotel have sought to unearth the beauty that was covered up over the years, rather than rewrite it.

"The Dean is a hotel which celebrates the locale in its design and offerings," Clemons said. "Our use of makers, artisans, and partners who are part of the Providence fabric is a unique and intentional model. We appreciate the city that we call home and hope to introduce all travelers to what we think is so special."

Within the 52 rooms are a vast array of sleeping quarters, from dormitory-style bunk beds all the way to grandiose king-sized bedrooms. While comfort is the priority, the way it is approached at the Dean Hotel is in a minimalistic manner.

"Our intention is a minimal approach to comfort, with little to clutter your stay both in the rooms, and on the property as a whole," Clemons said. "We err on the side of clean, bright spaces and subtle touches of vintage furniture and custom fixtures to complete our home away from home approach."

The best of part of the job for Clemons is having the distinct privilege of being the general manager of a staff that is fully dedicated to their jobs by providing stellar service and the celebration of the city they call home, Providence. Guests who choose the Dean Hotel tend to be interested in exploring the "Creative Capital," and Clemons said that he and the team at the Dean truly enjoy the opportunity to play host.

The Dean Hotel is located at 122 Fountain St. in Providence. More information about the hotel is available on its website, www.thedeanhotel.com.
