The Blind King Sees It All When It Comes To Windows

By Michael Abelson

Windows don't get much love. Taken for granted in most rooms, a well-maintained or well-styled window can bring a room together or add that flourish that puts it over the top. For more than 65 years, The Blind King in Providence has provided a full complement of window treatments from blinds to drapes and everything in between. Joseph Murray, project manager and lead estimator for the company, answered some questions about The Blind King and it's continued success.

How can your services enhance the value of residential homes?

A good quality window treatment always adds to the value of your home. Window treatments are an expensive addition to the interior of your home, however they can do so much for the customer. They can add to the aesthetic look, they can protect your furniture and floors, they help with energy efficiency and they can even act as security element. The first is obvious: a window treatment can really enhance the look of the room which and can be beneficial if your are selling your home. Secondly, window treatments, depending on the one you chose, can help you cut down on utility bills.

Sky lights and big windows may be good in the winter to help heat up the house but windows are one of the first places energy leaves the home. A cellular shade, for example, will prevent the sun from overheating the room in the summer but also help keep the heat from escaping through your windows in the winter. It is widely known of the damage the sun can cause to your beautiful hardwoods or your couch and chairs. However, window treatments will help deflect the suns harmful UV rays and prolong the life of your interior. Finally, you were probably wondering how window treatments help with security purposes. Motorized window treats have come a long way and now can be put on timers. Have a beach house or going away for vacation? You can set schedules to your window treatments so they move automatically making people think there is someone occupying the house.

What separates your business from competitors?

What separates us from our competitors is we are a full-service window treatment business. We stand by all of our work and our products. We have extensive knowledge of all the products and we are certified and trained by all of our manufacturers. The Blind King has been in the same location, on the Historic Federal Hill, for over a century. It is a family-owned business and we pride ourselves on the service we provide to our customers. We only provide high-quality products that will last and are made right here in the USA. We are one of the only Hunter Douglas Gallery dealers in Rhode Island, the other being our sister store in Middletown, A Shade Above. Being a gallery dealer allows us to open the customer up to a lot more options and perks.

What else would you like to convey to the public about your business? What do you enjoy about your job?

What I love most about my job is the look on our customers faces after we finish the installation. Their eyes light up, and right then you know you did a good job picking our the right window treatment and installing it to the utmost quality. Ask yourself how often you walk into a space and the window treatments have broken slats or they are hanging in all different directions and are clearly non-operable. That's what I love, going into a space and changing the whole appearance by just cleaning up the window treatments. Taking down those vinyl plastic mini blinds and maybe putting plantation shutters up or cellular shades, whichever it may be, the outcome of every job is what I love the most about my line of work. An Interior is never truly finished without the right window treatment.
